Compass is a free, non-medical program for individuals and families coping with a serious illness. The Compass program provides support and connects clients to community resources that help make life a little easier.
We understand that living with a serious illness can be like navigating through a storm without any direction. These illnesses can drain your energy and spirit and prevent you from managing your basic needs. Our team members will meet with you and your family to determine your needs and goals and help you fulfill them.
Ways Compass Can Help:
- Meals and Groceries
- Wheelchair Ramps
- Volunteer Support
- Safety Measures
- Spiritual Care

- Family Counseling
How Compass Has Helped Your Neighbors
Glenn White, Sr. (left) of Berlin wanted to earn his GED degree, and Compass team members helped him arrange that while White dealt with cancer. Compass also arranged a weekly food delivery to White and his wife. Compass visited with White once or a twice a month to check in on his family and provide support.
“It keeps me mentally strong, knowing I’m not fighting this alone.”
– Glenn White, Compass Client
June and John Allen Owens of Salisbury thought they were planning ahead when they purchased long-term care insurance. When they tried to start using their benefits, they had a hard time understanding how to proceed. A Compass team member intervened and helped the Owens family utilize their benefits. They were able to receive the in-home care that was necessary, fully paid for by insurance.
“We wouldn’t have been able to get this done if Compass hadn’t helped us out.”
– John Allen Owens, Compass Client
Nancy Lewis lived alone in Salisbury after losing her daughter and husband within a year. Compass team members and a volunteer visited her regularly to offer support and companionship. There is no time limit on Compass services, the program is available for free for any length of time needed as long as the client has a serious illness.
“Compass is somebody to talk to. They sit and listen to me. I was in a down mood and the volunteer stopped by with a little Christmas tree. It’s very comforting to have someone there when you don’t have anybody.”
– Nancy Lewis, Compass Client
