SUMMARY:Advanced Illness Doulas: How They Help
DESCRIPTION:FREE LIVE WEBINAR! Many people might be unaware that the term “doula\,” which has been used since the 1980s to refer to birth and postpartum care\, was first used to refer to death care in the late 1990s. After accompanying her mother through her illness and death\, former hospice nurse Deanna Cochran became one of the pioneers of the death doula movement. \nPlease join our presenter\, Alvin Harmon as he explains how Advanced-Illness Doulas have the power to significantly impact lives\, assisting those who are dying to have “a good death”\, while providing solace and peace of mind to their loved ones. It is in this space that an otherwise terrifying event is transformed into a sacred time that forges a sacred memory for the family. Being the presence that understands that what is happening is not abnormal or harmful while holding that space for the family is the Advance Illness Doula’s mission and goal. \nPRESENTER:Alvin Harmon\, CBCP\, CEOLD | Director of Spiritual\, Bereavement\, and Supportive Services\, Coastal Hospice \nMODERATOR:Lauren Blair\, MSW\, LMSW | Community Relations & Development Manager\, Coastal Hospice \n \n Register Here

SUMMARY:Black History and Healthcare: Past\, Present & Future
DESCRIPTION:FREE LIVE WEBINAR! Did you know that until the 1960’s Black doctors and patients were not allowed in most US hospitals? This restriction\, along with many other factors\, severely contributed to the poor health status of the Black Community. This is why having authentic discussions around the Black Community’s justified mistrust of the medical and scientific arenas are vital. In this live webinar\, we will take a look at how the current disparities have not only challenged our ability to provide quality care for this population but also how they obstruct the willingness of this community to participate in conversations concerning their own care. Listen in as we share some of the recent initiatives as they relate to supporting the Black Community when facing life-limiting illnesses. \nPANELISTS:Dr. Mark L. Bowen\, ED.D.\, SHRM-IWCS\, |Chief People and Culture Officer\, Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Chairperson\, Coastal Hospice \n Alvin Harmon\, CBCP\, CEOLD | Director of Bereavement Services\, Volunteer Services\, and Coastal Care Navigators\, Coastal Hospice \nRev. SUMMARY:The Long Goodbye - Understanding Anticipatory Grief Associated with Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementias
DESCRIPTION:12:00 PM – 1:00 PM\nFREE LIVE WEBINAR!In the frame of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month\, Alvin T. Harmon\, our Bereavement Care Services & Compass Program Manager brings to you his live keynote presentation: The Long Goodbye\, Understanding Anticipatory Grief Associated with Caregivers of Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias. \n“You don’t know why you burst into tears when others ask how your loved-one is doing. The shock is still overwhelming. The pain is still real. You have no idea when you first noticed it but the person you love has somehow managed to slip away. The most difficult part is that they’re still standing right in front of you. You want to be caring. You want to do and say all the “right” things. But in reality\, what you feel is that it just isn’t fair. You try to count yourself lucky for each day\, month or year that you have with them\, but as each one passes\, your hope for the future\, the works of the past and the joys of all those created memories are now being viewed by an audience of one. What you might not understand is that your grieving process may have already begun.” \nMODERATOR:Lauren Blair | Provider & Community Relations Manager\, Coastal Hospice \nFEATURING:Alvin T.
