Charitable Remainder Trust

A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) is an irrevocable trust designed to provide income for a beneficiary (or beneficiaries) for life or a specified term of years, with the remaining assets eventually passing to a designated charity. CRTs offer tax advantages, including a charitable income tax deduction, potential avoidance of capital gains taxes when appreciated assets are donated, and reduced estate taxes.

Charitable Lead Trust

A Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) is a type of split-interest trust that provides income payments to a charitable organization for a specific period, with the remaining assets eventually going to non-charitable beneficiaries (like family members). It’s essentially the reverse of a Charitable Remainder Trust, where the charity receives the remainder interest after a period of payments to non-charitable beneficiaries.
