Charitable Giving

It’s easy to wonder, “Can my gift really make a difference?” The answer is “YES.” Gifts of all sizes play an essential role at Coastal Hospice. Our donors help make all we do possible.

Since 1980, Coastal Hospice, Inc. has been offering comfort and care to the residents of the four Lower Eastern Shore counties. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that puts the needs of our patients first – regardless of their ability to pay. Your donation to Coastal Hospice allows us to promote dignity and quality of life for patients and families who face life-limiting conditions.

Planned Gifts

Planned gifts represent gift options that can be designed to meet your personal philanthropic and financial goals. Some planned gifts, such as a gift in your will, require no current outlay of funds at all. And other planned gifts, including the charitable gift annuity, make it possible to support our work, enjoy a tax deduction if you itemize, and receive a lifetime income at the same time.

In this unpredictable and challenging economic climate, a planned gift can be a rewarding way to make a difference in others’ lives. Please contact Director of Advancement, Kerrie Bunting for additional information.

Coastal Hospice Tribute Gifts

When you support the Coastal Hospice Honorary & Memorial Tributes program you can honor someone close to you or memorialize the life of a loved one while helping others in need. You can donate in many ways and designate your gift for “general need” or to an existing restricted fund.

When your gift is received, we will send a letter of acknowledgement to you from Coastal Hospice. Should you request, a letter will also be sent to the family of the loved one (without mention of the amount.) Please be sure to provide the name and address of the person you wish to receive the letter. All donors will be included in our newsletter with the name of the person they honored or memorialized (unless you request to remain anonymous).

Memorial Gifts

Keep the memory of your loved one alive while making a lasting impact in our communities. At your request, we will acknowledge your gift with a card to the family or friend of the deceased.

Include name of person memorialized in the check memo or attach a note with the check indicating family member’s name and address to notify that a donation has been made in their loved one’s memory.

Gifts That Can Be Made Later

We are grateful you are interested in learning about the impact of estate planning and the benefits of charitable gift planning. We have found that our planned gift donors want to do something special for Coastal Hospice because they care deeply about our organization, and the want to make a difference in the world they live in – now and in the future.

Bequest

A bequest is a gift through your will or revocable trust that enables you to retain the asset during your life and provide significant support to Coastal Hospice when you no longer require the asset. You may choose a specific item, a percentage, or a residual bequest. You may also choose to make Coastal Hospice a contingent beneficiary in case the heirs are unable to receive the estate.

Federal Tax ID Number: 52-1214775

Bank or Investment Account

Financial accounts can be a simple and inexpensive way to leave a legacy gift for Coastal Hospice. Contact your financial advisor to see how easy the process is to make Coastal Hospice a beneficiary of a particular investment or bank.

Retirement Plan Assets

In some cases, retirement assets can be the heaviest assets taxed in an estate. Naming Coastal Hospice as your beneficiary can avoid that taxation, enabling the asset to pass tax free to Coastal Hospice. You may also make Coastal Hospice a percentage beneficiary or a contingent beneficiary of a retirement plan.

Gifts You Can Make Now

We encourage everyone considering a planned gift to consult legal and/or financial professionals of their choosing. They can help to answer your questions, such as:

Which gift is right for you?

Which gifts are completely free of estate and other taxes?

Which gifts are subject to estate or income taxes for you and your heirs?

Which gifts can provide income? Now, deferred until retirement, or to fund (for example) children’s or grandchildren’s future college expenses?

Appreciated Securities

The gift of appreciated securities is most often in the form of common stock or mutual funds. Such a gift is a valuable way to benefit Coastal Hospice. In exchange, you will receive tax benefits based on the fair market value of the assets. Other appreciated assets may be gifted, but it is important to discuss these in advance with Coastal Hospice.

Life Insurance

You can make a gift of a policy that makes Coastal Hospice the owner and beneficiary.

Charitable IRA Rollover

Also known as Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), QCDs are a savvy way for individuals age 72 or older to use their IRA’s to maximize their charitable impact by making tax-free distributions directly to Coastal Hospice.

How to Make a Charitable Distribution:

Option 1: Contact your IRA custodian and request a direct transfer to: Coastal Hospice, Inc., P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Our Tax ID # is: 52-1214775. Do not withdraw the funds to contribute yourself, or you will have to report the withdrawal as taxable income. If you are requesting the transfer at the end of the tax year, allow enough time for the transfer to complete by December 31.

Option 2: Send a gift directly to Coastal Hospice using your IRA checkbook. Allow extra time for the gift to clear in order to take a tax deduction in the current calendar year. Contact the Advancement Director, Tammy Patrick at 410.742.8732 or tpatrick@coastalhospice.org with your name, the exact amount of your gift, and the name of your IRA custodian so we can provide you with substantiation for your tax return.

Gifts That Pay Income

You may make a life income gift by transferring securities, cash, or other property to Coastal Hospice or a trustee. Coastal Hospice or your trustee then manages the investment of the assets and pays an income to you, your designated beneficiaries, or both.

Charitable Gift Annuity

This is an irrevocable gift of cash or securities by which you receive a predictable fixed income for life. At your passing, Coastal Hospice receives the residual value of the annuity. There may be tax benefits as well, depending upon your particular situation.

Charitable Remainder Trust

This trust is an irrevocable gift of assets into a charitable trust that provides you a fixed (Annuity Trust) or variable (Unitrust) income for life or for a set term. At the trust’s termination, its assets become a generous gift to Coastal Hospice. There are potential tax benefits, dependent upon your situation.

Charitable Lead Trust

The lead trust’s income payments are distributed to Coastal Hospice for a set period of years, after which the assets are transferred back to the grantor or whomever the grantor has named the beneficiary. This provides generous annual support for the organization now, removes the asset from the estate and passes an asset to heirs with little or no tax. There is no immediate deduction for the lead trust.

Macky and Pam Stansell House Giving Opportunities

A study commissioned by the Coastal Hospice Board of Directors confirmed the unmet need for a hospice residence, and for nearly a decade the board worked with lead donors Macky and Pam Stansell to launch a capital campaign and build the Stansell House. More than $6.5 million has been raised. Donation and naming opportunities for rooms, landscapes and more remain available.

Additional Giving Methods

Endowed Gifts

Creating an Endowed Gift allows you to help safeguard the future of Coastal Hospice in a very specific way. It is an investment in our future that will help us grow and thrive for years to come.

Recurring Gifts

If you would like to support Coastal Hospice throughout the year or would like to make your gift more budget-friendly, please consider making a recurring gift, which can be deducted monthly.

Pledges

By spreading payments over a period of time – typically not more than five years – pledges allow donors to make larger commitments and fulfill them at a comfortable pace, while also receiving recognition through naming opportunities.

Charter Society

The Charter Society was established to recognize donors who gave a cumulative total of $1,000 or more during a calendar year.
