Tax-Smart Donations

Increase your impact where it matters most.

Take Advantage of Tax Benefits

As a caring donor, your contributions touch many lives every day. As a savvy donor, we understand that you want your financial contributions to make the greatest impact possible on the causes you care for.

That is why at Coastal Hospice, our donors are able to take advantage of the tax benefits associated with donations of appreciated stocks. Simply transfer stocks to our 501(c)(3) account and qualify for a fair market value tax deduction, if you itemize, on the date of transfer.

You pay no capital gains tax when the assets are liquidated, making the biggest impact on an organization you care about and on your tax savings.

Why donate appreciated stock?

  • Potentially avoid capital gains tax: you pay 15-30% if you sell the stock
  • Claim current year, fair market value as an income tax deduction
  • When you donate stock before selling it, you can deduct the full fair market value of
your charitable stock donation. You’re allowed to deduct up to 30% of your adjusted
gross income in stocks that you’ve held for at least a year.
  • Nonprofit keeps the money you would have paid the IRS

Tax Savings Example

Assume you have $5,000 worth of stock with a cost basis of $2,000 ($3,000 capital gain). Rather than selling the stock, you can donate it and save a bundle on taxes!

Sell $5,000 Stock

  • Pay $1,500 in taxes*
  • Coastal Hospice receives $3,500

*estimate of federal + state = 30% tax rate

Donate $5,000 in Stock

  • Avoid tax on stock sale $1,500*
  • Save $1,500 via $5,000 charitable contribution deduction*
  • Coastal Hospice receives $5,000

*estimate of federal + state = 30% tax rate
