Serious Illness Conversations: Your Approach Matters

Communicating goals of care and treatment preferences with patients and their families experiencing serious illness can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. Join Dr. Carpenter to learn about several techniques to improve your skills in conducting serious illness conversations.

Objectives:

  • Explain the importance of ongoing communication about care goals with seriously ill individuals
  • Describe central factors in communicating serious news.
  • Conduct a goals of care conversation using key communication skills.
  • Carry out a plan to conduct goals of care conversations with seriously ill patients in your clinical setting.
